Have you ever tried kompeito「金平糖」? It literally means golden flat sugar and comes from the Portuguese word “confeito”, meaning a type of sugar candy. It’s a candy-making technique introduced to Japan in the early 16th century by Portuguese traders, and since sugar was rare and expensive to manufacture back then, kompeito was a sweet treat for the upper class. It has been regarded as a standard Japanese sweet since the Meiji period.
